Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) Calculator

Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) measures the amount of alcohol in a person's bloodstream, typically represented as a percentage. For example, a BAC of 0.08% means there are 0.08 grams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood. BAC can vary based on several factors such as weight, sex, age, amount of alcohol consumed, and time since the last drink.

How to Calculate BAC

A common formula to estimate BAC is the Widmark Formula:

BAC= (Alcohol Consumed in Grams / (Body Weight in Grams × Widmark Factor)) × 100 − (Metabolism Rate × Time Since Last Drink)

Where:

  1. Widmark Factor: ~0.55 for females, ~0.68 for males.
  2. Alcohol Consumed in Grams: Can be calculated as the volume of the drink (in liters) × alcohol percentage × 0.789 (density of ethanol).
  3. Metabolism Rate: Typically around 0.015 BAC per hour.

Understanding the Result

  • Low BAC (0.01% - 0.05%): Mild effects, such as relaxation.
  • Moderate BAC (0.06% - 0.15%): Increased impairment, affecting coordination, speech, and decision-making.
  • High BAC (0.16% - 0.30%): Severe impairment, risk of loss of consciousness.
  • Dangerous BAC (Above 0.30%): Risk of alcohol poisoning, life-threatening.

Improving Health Regarding Alcohol Consumption

  • Limit Alcohol Intake: Moderate alcohol consumption is typically one drink per day for women and two for men.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink water between alcoholic beverages.
  • Eat Before Drinking: Food slows alcohol absorption.
  • Know Your Limits: Track your drinking patterns and understand your tolerance.

This calculator estimates BAC based on weight, gender, amount of alcohol consumed, ABV, and time since the last drink.

Note: This calculator provides an estimate and should not be used as a legal measure. For accurate results, consult a medical or legal professional or use a breathalyzer.
